One year into an ARI based PBX and we managed to complete a Basic Call. We gave ourselves a challenge, every Dev should be able to develop a PBX feature with no prior experience about SIP, Asterisk, Kamailio and all the other things. I will show what we have come up with.
"A large scale PBX based on Asterisk is not something you would do just for fun. We have a base of about 3/4 of a Million Subscribers and we are running a very large legacy Asterisk Based PBX. Sangome gave us the possibility of an RESTful, up to date platform (Asterisk ARI) and we are building a new system based on this. We have to manage several milestones in order for us to be able to reach our goal. First, we started with a simple playback and then went further by establishing a basic call. Since we wanted a lot of requirements, such as scalability, easy entry for new developers etc. to be in our finished solution then it took us quite a while and along the way we learned a lot.
Some say: ""All roads lead to Rome"". We found it is not always the same with ARI. We come across a lot dead ends due to a lack of easy documentation or examples. I'll show you our hardest leanings and some good practise we have come up with. As well, I will give a brief overview of our soft migration path, which we think enables us to move all our features over one by one. This talk will not go to deep into ARI but will provide a good picture on how things might come together. It will be possible to follow the talk without knowing ARI beforehand.
